Decide what's best for you
Yes, we know, where do you start? Sign up for every single one, and then think...now what? We've all been there, so think about your customers. What would they use, and why? Then from there, trial two social media sites. You'll then be able to quantify your responses and it will give you the opportunity to learn and reflect.
Define your goals
Potentially this could go first! Ask yourself, what am I trying to achieve? More sales? well of course! I tend to sway towards the SMART model when trying to define goals. Let's have a look at it in more detail:
Specific - So, as already mentioned is it sales, or are you trying to strengthen your customers' loyalty or maybe you need to improve your online presence? There are numerous considerations but start off with one specific objective.
Measurable - This is where you think about how you are going to measure your goals, feedback from customers in terms of reviews, or maybe other tools such as Hootsuite.
Achievable - Can you realistically achieve the goal? Baby steps are key, so don't start running up that mountain just yet
Relevant - Does the goal mirror your own values? This is key, you have to ensure that it matches with what you truly believe in. You'll find it much easier to progress if you consider its value.
Time - Time is precious, so stick to one goal. For example, "I want to increase customer awareness on Facebook"
Time to do an audit
I know, sounds dull, doesn't it? But this is one of the best ways to develop social media content that your audience will love. Think about your customer, what do they engage in online, how can you help them? What posts do you tend to get more likes from? It is images, videos or text? Look online at companies who have a similar offering, and who maybe have a stronger following, this will give you an idea of what your customers might appreciate seeing on social media. Mirroring is absolutely fine by the way, as you will, of course, change the tone to suit your customers, doing a full audit will also help you identify gaps so you'll become confident to start doing your own thing.
Plan ahead
Social media has to be consistent, as its a nurturing process. Consistency will help your level of engagement, as your customers will be anticipating your next post. I understand the time-consuming aspect of this, and with everything else to do. How on earth do you find the time? Our advice would be to set up a social media calendar. This means you can plan for the week or even month. This will also stop you from posting just because you feel like you have too, but you must do spontaneous posts along with your planned posts but you'll find it much easier alongside your planned posts. You can plan in events, like easter, valentines etc. Offering discount, advice etc. I have mentioned it but Hootsuite is a fantastic way to plan your calendar so you can relax! I have also uploaded a handy calendar which you can find in our templates section
Be human
I know, how obvious! The reason your customers love you is that it's YOU so always be yourself, and don't fall into the trap of trying to be something else online.
